Best combination: precise and beautiful. If youre serious about astronomy or just a beginner, you should have SkySafari. Im enjoying the new notifications about satellites and planets. I use the "plus" version on my 16GB iPhone and the "Pro" version on my iPad. Telescope control using wifi (with the Skyfi hardware) is a very handy, clean and elegant feature.
I Love that App and use it quite often. But why do i have to pay the full price when upgrading from plus to pro?
Best Astronomy App.
Pros - Great first impression - Nice Milky Way rendering - Solid catalogue - Can show double star separations on the star chart - Double star rendering pretty realistic, eg Epsilon Lyrae better than Stellarium - Hasnt crashed on me so far Issues - Uneven rendering. Mag 11 solar system objects are shown brighter than mag 3-4 stars - why? Also in different color - why? - Unintuitive limiting magnitude controls. Settings change by zoom level - No concept of light pollution settings (as eg Stellarium has) - Poor controls for manually operated scopes. Why are mirror flips etc not part of the equipment settings? Setting them manually in a submenu every time is a pain. Why no direct controls to skip from overview screen to predefined equipment views? Going via sub menus is again a pain, somehow only three configs make it into the submenu. Again the Stellarium oculars plugin does this much better - poor display for preconfigured equipment. The concentric circles are irritating. Why not dampen the view outside the ocular to black, or by a settable percentage? Why not display the current magnification level? Stellarium oculars again does this better. - The tonight overview shows useless info for observers like distance in AUs, but omits essential info like apparent magnitude, altitude over horizon (eg for planets, for ISS) or current phase (for moon). Please fix. Also consider using space better in landscape mode. - object info screens drown you in data. Why not show a small rendering of the object under current conditions? Why not group relevant info for observing right now close to the top (eg current planet elongation from sun), and move less relevant stuff to bottom (eg galactic coordinates). Better still, move out the seldom used info (like orbital parameters, galactic and ecliptic coordinates etc etc) to additional tabs accessible via horizontal swipe. - info screen stops showing data about past events immediately (eg flares, transits). This is annoying for writeups, consider just graying out the last 3 events or so (or make timer controls available from inside the details screen) - The double star separation database seems to max out at 999", so labels for popular bino pairs like alcor/mizar etc make no sense (consider using some form of floating point, two digits plus mantissa should be enough). - double star pairs labelled on charttend to be impossible to view (like 0.5" separation with 8 mag difference). Consider slanting the selection of stars to label towards decent separations and meaningful mag separations. Better still, use the angular separation limit of the scope from the equipment settings - I find myself grappling with which doubles Ive seen, and the app does not help because it doesnt seem to highlight both elements of the pair.
The best astronomy software I have tried to date. Have not tried to use it to drive a telescope yet.
This is all you need.
Well-deserved reputation as the top astronomy app.
Despite few glitches its the best planetarium for amateur astronomer. Hope for more stability in 5.1
The best! Fun to use during our frequent cloudy nights here in Michigan. You can tell this app was made by people who know and love astronomy.
Great for users at all levels, from casual observer to serious amateur.
Awesome and beautiful! Highly recommended it for all lovers of astronomy; a must have app for those who love science and the wonders of our Universe.
Im new at astronomy and have put 99% of my time into building 3 astronomy cameras and have some decent photos and SkySafari has been my guide to the stars and to understanding more about astronomy. Its pretty hard to track the moon, planet and stars and this app is my sole guide for now, the clock is especially important to plan the camera position and understand the orbits. For now I am probably using 33% of the total app and certainly will want to use any feature that can be used to drive the camera tracker motors. Update 6/2016: I was able to perfect my home made gear box and computer driven STarTracker system all the while learning more while using Sky Safari 5 Plus. I especially like the fast forward date and time to understand orbits and navigation. 5 Stars .... Next to adapt SkySafari serial interface to aim my system but for now I have no clue.
Im using SkySafari 5 Plus to control a scope with custom controller hardware via the LX200 protocol. It provides an excellent user interface for scope control.
Perfect app for planning sessions with binoculars or a telescope. The settings are great because you can customize them to almost every detail of your location. It shows a wealth a satellites, asteroids, stars , and DSOs. Ive never been disappointed with this app.
I feel like whole universe at my hand.excellent App. My thanks to all who made it happen.
Excellent app for the serious amateur astronomer, along with beginners. Perfect way to learn the night sky. It is as good and in some cases better than astronomy apps costing much more. A major plus is that it can connect by wifi to Celestron NexStar GOTO telescopes to control the telescope using a smartphone or iPad. I highly recommend this app to amateur astronomers of all skill levels.
Cant find Nidiru Planet X. If you or someone provide info on this issue I will not give the app more then two stars. Other things are missing as well. Other than that the app is flawless.
Very nice and easy to use product.
This is an outstanding app for astronomers regardless of experience level. Great to have an app that I can use from my iPhone in connection with my scope.
